Fly a Spitfire from Norwich Airport

RAF Horsham St Faith

Norwich Airport was formerly known as RAF Horsham St Faith dating from 1940. Initially Bristol Blenheim and Boulton Paul Defiant Bombers operated here, soon followed by the Supermarine Spitfires of 19 and 66 Squadrons relocated from nearby RAF Duxford.

Famously in 1941 a Blenheim flew out of Horsham St Faith and dropped a box at Saint Omer / Longuenesse containing a pair of artificial legs for Wing Commander Douglas Bader who had lost his prosthetics after being shot down over France.

As well as RAF aircraft like the Spitfire I and De Havilland Mosquito IV the United States Army Air Force also operated here and designated the airfield ‘Station 123’, operating B-26 Marauder bombers, P-47 Thunderbolt and later after upgrading the runway, B-24 Liberator bombers.
The RAF continued to operate post war ushering in the age of Jet aircraft with Gloster Meteor, de Havilland Vampire English Electric Canberra and Gloster Javelins all operating here. 1967 the RAF left the airfield but many of the original buildings and wartime hangars were repurposed in the creation of Norwich International Airport.

At the edge of the airfield you can find the Horsham St Faith RAF memorial with its distinctive RAF Roundel and USAAF ‘Stars and Bars’ clearly visible.

Norwich Airport is 2.5 miles North of the Cathedral City of Norwich. With easy road access via the M11/A11 heading out of London and the South East. By rail, Norwich Station has regular services from London, Liverpool, Sheffield and Manchester.

Today Ryanair, Loganair, KLM, Tui and Blue Islands all operate commercial flights to over 270 destinations so you may find some considerably larger and more modern aircraft parked nearby when you come to Fly a Spitfire from our partners Saxon Air private facility.
