We are excited to announce Fly a Spitfire Shropshire. Spitfire flights will commence from Shropshire this September on the 14th & 15th, from Sleap Airfield. This is an exciting addition to our expanding list of external locations for this year, as 15th September marks Battle of Britain Day, 86 years since the Luftwaffe launched its largest air attack on London, involving 1,500 aircraft. There is no better day to Fly a Spitfire from Sleap Airfield in Shropshire than on Battle of Britain Day.
We look forward to heading to Sleap Airfield next month. A Spitfire flight from Sleap offers a fantastic experience, situated within the rural Shropshire countryside, north of Shrewsbury and surrounded by miles of flat fields, with fantastic views from the aircraft after departure, including across North Wales. During your pre-flight briefing with the pilot, before taking to the skies, you can discuss your Spitfire experience and bespoke your flight route, perhaps over your house or a particular landmark, or maybe enjoy a scenic flight around the Shropshire countryside. Feel what it was like to Fly a Spitfire, take the controls under the guidance of our qualified pilots, and, if you’re brave enough, experience the famous ‘Victory Roll’.
A flight from Shropshire is even more special, as the site was known during the Second World War as ‘RAF Sleap’. This airfield was once home to Operational Training Units and Bomber Command. Due to the nature of the flat surrounding land, RAF Sleap was primarily used to train pilots of Wellington and Whitley Bombers. The site was also home to Airspeed Horsa Gliders, with training exercises including the instruction of pilots to fly these gliders in early 1944, ahead of the upcoming major operations of D-Day and, later, Operation Market Garden in Holland, where these gliders were widely used.
Today, remnants of Sleap’s wartime airfield remain, including many original buildings, the original control tower and, of course, the wartime runways. Sleap Airfield now lies in civilian hands, home to Shropshire Aero Club, operating light aircraft, as well as hosting the fantastic aviation event ‘Sleapkosh’ each year at the airport. Onsite is a fantastic café, serving hot food and offering views across the airfield, and with a cuppa in hand, there isn’t a better place to watch a Spitfire take to the skies!
