On Monday, 3rd August, we concluded our week of Fly a Spitfire Newquay operations, having arrived in Cornwall on 27th July.
Throughout the week, at Fly a Spitfire Newquay, our team had the privilege of offering Spitfire and Mustang flights over Cornwall’s spectacular coastline and countryside. There are few places in the UK that provide such a stunning backdrop for flying in a historic warbird.
Leading our operations at Fly a Spitfire Newquay was Supermarine Spitfire MJ627, with Spitfire MT818 joining later in the week.
From 1st to 3rd August, our legendary P-51 Mustang “Moonbeam McSwine” also took to the skies, giving passengers the opportunity to experience one of the world’s most iconic fighters from the rear cockpit.
Throughout the week, both aircraft showcased the spectacular scenery that Cornwall has to offer from a truly unique perspective.
Breathtaking Views from the Air
While the aircraft themselves were undoubtedly the highlight, the scenery was equally impressive.
Blessed with clear blue skies throughout much of the week, passengers enjoyed panoramic views of Cornwall’s endless bays, secluded coves, turquoise seas and dramatic coastline – landscapes unlike anywhere else in the UK.
Flying a Spitfire or Mustang over Cornwall offers a perspective that simply cannot be experienced from the ground.
Bespoke Flight Routes
Many of our flights were tailored to each passenger’s preferred route.
Popular destinations included Land’s End, Penzance, the picturesque harbour town of St Ives and the iconic St Michael’s Mount.
Others chose to overfly beaches where family and friends were waiting below, while some requested a flypast of their home, allowing loved ones to wave from the garden as the aircraft passed overhead.
During the flight you have the option to take the controls, under guidance of a qualified pilot and even experience a ‘Victory Roll’.
Experience the P-51 Mustang ‘Cadillac of the skies’
Alongside our Spitfire flights, passengers also had the opportunity to experience the legendary P-51 Mustang “Moonbeam McSwine”. An American counterpart to the Supermarine Spitfire, the Mustang is presented in a striking polished aluminium finish that gleams beautifully in the Cornish sunshine.
Although not dual-controlled, passengers sit in the rear seat directly behind the pilot, within the same cockpit bubble. This provides exceptional all-round visibility and an uninterrupted view of Cornwall’s spectacular coastline.
Operating from Flynqy Pilot Training Centre
Throughout our stay, we operated from the Flynqy Pilot Training Centre, home to Cornwall’s only CAA-approved training organisation for the Private Pilot Licence.
