Cornwall Airport Newquay has a rich and layered history that reflects both its military significance and its evolving role in civil aviation. Its origins trace back to 1934, when Provincial Airways launched the first commercial passenger service to Cornwall, using a landing strip at Trebelzue Big Field. By 1939, Western Airways had established a route from Swansea to Penzance via Newquay, marking the beginning of regular air traffic in the region.
During World War II, the site was transformed into a strategic military asset. In 1941, Trebelzue became a satellite landing ground for RAF St Eval, supporting anti-shipping and U-boat patrols. Two years later, the airfield was renamed RAF St Mawgan, and its newly constructed runways began hosting American long-range bombers en route to various war theatres. Post-war, the base continued to serve military purposes, including as a Coastal Command station and later as a Master Diversion Airfield. The airfield played a vital role in WWII as Overseas Aircraft Despatch Unit for RAF Ferry Command. Its role was to process and despatch aircraft, which would have included many Spitfires, to other bases and to destinations overseas.
Civil aviation began to take root in the 1950s and 60s, with various airlines offering seasonal and charter services. By 1962, a portion of RAF St Mawgan was officially designated as Newquay Airport, complete with a modest civil terminal. Over the following decades, a mix of regional carriers operated flights connecting Cornwall to major UK cities. The airport’s dual identity persisted until 2008, when RAF operations ceased and Cornwall Council took full ownership, transitioning the site into a fully civilian airport. RAF St Mawgan, continues to operate as an RAF training facility.
Today, Cornwall Airport Newquay is not only a gateway to the region but also a hub for innovation. It hosts Spaceport Cornwall, a facility designed to launch small satellites into orbit using air-launch systems—a bold step into the future of aerospace technology. From its humble beginnings in a field to its current role in space exploration, the airport’s journey mirrors Cornwall’s own blend of heritage and forward-thinking ambition.
