Fly a Spitfire from Ronaldsway airport

The Isle of Man Airport—also known as Ronaldsway Airport or Purt Aer Vannin in Manx—has a surprisingly rich and layered history that stretches back nearly a century.

Early Beginnings – Ronaldsway was first used as an airfield IN 1928. Passenger services to the UK began in 1933, initially operated by Blackpool and West Coast Air Services. 1934–1937: More airlines joined, including Aer Lingus and Railway Air Services, which later transferred operations to Isle of Man Air Services.

Wartime Role – World War II: The airfield became RAF Ronaldsway, one of the few that continued civilian flights during wartime. It hosted No. 1 Ground Defence and Gunnery School, using aircraft like the Westland Wallace for training exercises. The Isle of Man’s location in the Irish Sea made it ideal for convoy escort missions and shipping patrols. Ronaldsway, along with newly built RAF Jurby and RAF Andreas hosted Spitfire, Hurricane, and Boulton Paul Defiant squadrons tasked with defending the North Irish Sea. Their missions included shipping patrols, convoy escorts, and airspace defense, especially around strategic ports like Liverpool and Belfast.

The island hosted radar installations and codebreaking training. ATS staff trained in Douglas later worked at Bletchley Park, contributing to the Allied effort to crack German and Japanese codes. Ronaldsway was part of the world’s first Area Air Traffic Control system, based in Ramsey Grammar School, which coordinated airspace over the Irish Sea during the Battle of Britain. In 1943 control shifted to the Admiralty, transforming it into a Fleet Air Arm training station.

Post-War Development – After the war, the airport returned to civilian use and saw growth in scheduled services. Airlines like British European Airways and Cambrian Airways became key players in the 1960s and ’70s when the airport became a hub for honeymooners and tourists, with quirky traditions like photographers offering snapshots at the aircraft steps.

Modern Day – Today, the airport serves as the main gateway to the Isle of Man alongside the Sea Terminal.
We’re delighted to be operating Spitfire passenger rides from Isle of Man Ronaldsway Airport for 2026.
